I hope you had a great summer and time to prepare for this new year. Amel France is off to flying start. Its advocacy mission in Greece with migrants and refugees was a success. At the moment the team is preparing the follow-up activities, i. e. a conference and photo exhibition.

The conference will take place on October, 11 th at 6pm at the Maison du Tourisme of Grenoble and will put forward two round tables, the first one focusing on the feedback of Amel France’s members in Greece and the other on the political handling of the refugee crisis. Hello everyone,

Our advocacy officers have just come back from their mission in Greece. Amel France’s team will now process the information and testimonies brought back from the field. The purpose is to create awareness-raising and communication tools in order to organize at home and abroad several advocacy events.

Indeed, Amel France will organize a conference in Grenoble in October tackling the welcoming  and living conditions of migrants and refugees across Europe. Experts on migratory policies and international solidarity issues will deliver their views and beliefs on the matter. Members of Amel France will also participate and share their experience on the ground. This event will also bring forward shared experiences of associations and networks of actors in the Rhone-Alpes region working  with migrants and refugees.

At the same time Amel France will implement a photo exhibit gathering portraits and life stories of migrants and refugees.

Last week, our advocacy officer went to Leros, a small island just 35 kilometers off the coast of Turkey, in order to take stock of the situation. She was able to meet with local and international NGOs, gather testimonies and thus identify needs to be covered.

In the hotspot there are around 450 persons. Most of them are waiting for their asylum application to follow through. On the ground the First reception center is in charge of registering the arrivals and ECHO is providing refugees with basic services. Living conditions are relatively good and basic needs are covered. However a thorough follow-up on asylum requests and information on the procedure are lacking. The idea of staying on the island another six months without work, independence and without knowing what lies ahead is very difficult to endure for migrants and refugees. Therefore psychosocial programs are essential to provide them with support and improve their future perspectives.

News from Greece:

Recently an advocacy officer, expert on migration and legal issues, joined our team in Greece in order to reinforce Amel France’s presence in the country and to continue efforts with migrants and refugees. In Athens, she met with various non for profit organizations and analyzed the context. There are today around 54 000 migrants and refugees in Greece. Since the implementation of the EU-turkey agreement, the number of arrivals has considerable decreased. In May 2016, the arrivals were estimated to 1159 whereas they were estimated at 156 000 between January and May 2016. However thousands of refugees are still waiting in Turkey to cross the Mediterranean sea or choosing other routes to reach Europe. In Athens, refugees and migrants are gathered in different official and non-official places. Some of them are at the Pirée harbor or in squats and others in official camps, reception centers and housings provided by NGOs and government services.

Update on the current situation in Greece:

Last week Amel France’s advocacy officer worked in close collaboration with local NGOs on Kos Island, and especially with the organization Kos-Solidarity. She was able to follow the activities of the association. Her research focused on the welcoming and living conditions of refugees and underlined the obstacles to the efficiency of the humanitarian response and on the needs still to be covered.

On the ground, the local civil society insist on the necessity of promoting safe and decent living conditions, Human Rights and on raising awareness among local inhabitants. Moreover, some actors have related the need for psychosocial support. A daily presence seems relevant in order to inform refugees on the evolution of the situation, on their rights and procedures to follow. Psychological support programs also need to be implemented in order to accompany the beneficiaries suffering for psychological trauma.

Local associations have a great role to play in the humanitarian response. A safe and welcoming environment must be provided to migrants and refugees. However financial and technical means are inadequate thus rendering the work of NGOs difficult and the welcoming system appalling.

Weekly feedback regarding the advocacy mission in Greece:

After a visit in Athens where our advocacy officer and photographer met with Mr Gilles-Henri Tardy, former French Consul and today director of the non for profit organization Humani, the mission continues in the Dodecanese islands of Kos, Leros and Kalymnos. During their first week on the ground, Amel France’s team carried out a situation analysis regarding the evolution of the welcoming system of refugees and migrants and their living conditions.

Once on the Dodecanese islands, they were able to deepen the research by meeting with different international humanitarian actors on the field (UNHCR, ECHO, Save the Children) and participating in the activities implemented by the local civil society. They provided support to the association Kos-Solidarity in Kos and to the organization Picpa on the island of Leros. Moreover, in Kos, they were able to visit the refugee camp site that is scheduled to open in the coming days. The collection of testimonies has also started and will continue in the following weeks.

Since the creation of Amel France, many of you have been following our activities. More than 37,000 persons have visited the website since July 2015 and Amel France’s team is grateful for that. Today we need a little bit more of your support.

Amel France’s advocacy officer and photographer will then go to the Dodecanese islands of Kos, Leros and Kalymnos in order to meet up with the local civil society and proceed to the collection of testimonies and information on the welcoming and living conditions for migrants and refugees passing through the islands. Two members of Amel France will soon leave for Kos Island, Greece. This two-month mission as part of the project of support to the local civil society acting in favor of refugees passing through Kos Island aims at implementing advocacy work. Amel France’s advocacy officer and photographer will thus be in charge of collecting testimonies and documentation with refugees and local non for profit actors with regards to the welcoming and living conditions of migrants in the Hellenic Republic. After the analysis and the treatment of the material collected on the field, Amel France will organize in the fall 2016 several conferences and photo exhibitions in Grenoble, Lyon, Athens and in Spain. The objective, thanks to the creation of advocacy tools (pictures, stories…), is to raise awareness among politicians, the public opinion and non for profit actors on the necessity of improving the welcoming system of refugees, the access to basic services and the recognition of the rights of refugees.

These conferences, moderated by international cooperation professionals, will gather experts on the migration question and focus on mobilizing public authorities and the public in order to ease the work and efforts of the civil society; improving the cohabitation between the local populations and the refugees thus promoting a better mutual understanding on the living conditions and needs of the refugees; bringing people together and fostering civic and humanitarian values.

PLEASE VISIT OUR WEBSITE AND FACEBOOK PAGE FOR NEWS ON THIS MISSION AND FOR FURTHER INFORMATION ON THE DATES AND LOCATIONS OF THE UPCOMING CONFERENCES.

General Assemblies on International Humanitarian Action, 2015 edition

The General Assemblies on International Humanitarian Action took place on November, 2nd, 3rd and 4th in Grenoble, France. This three-day colloquium, organized by the association Humacoop in partnership with the city of Grenoble, brought together actors from various background and countries (Haiti, Lebanon, Egypt, Syria...)around the current challenges facing humanitarian and development interventions. In the form of round tables, conferences and workshops, and placing the question of partnerships at the center of the debates, this event gathered more than 200 participants with the objective of contributing the World Humanitarian Summit process in 2016 in Istanbul.

Amel Association International, represented by its president and founder Doctor Kamel Mohanna and by its program and partnership coordinator Mrs Virginie Lefève, strongly backed this event.  Sharing their experience, they contributed to many discussions especially on the situation in Syria and the consequences for the neighboring countries, on the question of international humanitarian law and finally on current and potential crisis. These Assemblies were also the opportunity to strengthen the link between Amel Association International and Amel France.
